| CYBERA TO BUILD EXTENSIVE PRIVATE NETWORK FOR MAPCO |
Nashville, Tenn., October 23, 2003 - MAPCO Express has selected Cybera Inc. (www.cybera.net) to build the first dedicated network connecting its 248 convenience store locations in six states.
MAPCO chose Cybera's SmartNetwork over other retail network alternatives because it was affordable and fully managed. The company will utilize the broadband capacity to support:
- Significantly faster credit card transactions
- Daily and weekly polling for sales, labor costs, cash drops, etc.
- Basic inventory management, such as monitoring the amount of gasoline remaining in fuel tanks
- Security surveillance
The faster transactions and critical business intelligence were not possible using the existing store-by-store dial-up Internet access.
"This network will allow MAPCO to reach new standards of customer service and convenience store management," said Scotty Creason, IT Manager at MAPCO. "We will have noticeably faster credit card processing, better inventory control, and real-time business intelligence about our customers' preferences and store security."
MAPCO researched a number of network alternatives, including satellite popular in convenience stores because of their remote locations. Cybera's approach combines DSL and Frame Relay access options into a private network fitting MAPCO's budget, real-time data criteria and other business requirements.
"Fortunately, Cybera's SmartNetwork solved the fundamental struggle between affordability and functionality for MAPCO," said Cliff Duffey, Cybera's president and chief executive officer. "We are excited about supporting MAPCO in their quest to utilize broadband networking to improve their bottom line."
MAPCO's new network will be fully managed, which means that Cybera handles relationships with multiple telecommunications companies, troubleshooting, installations and customer service issues. The networking costs from all 248 locations will also be consolidated on one bill. And unlike VPN-based networking options, the Cybera network architecture guarantees security, reliability and performance.
MAPCO has already rolled out 120 locations and expects complete rollout by the middle of November. The company's stores are concentrated primarily in Nashville, Tenn.; Memphis, Tenn.; and Richmond, Va. It also has stores in Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Louisiana.
Cybera recently launched a similar broadband network program for Cooker Restaurants. That effort increased network capacity 500 percent for about the same price as the dial-up network it replaced.
